5.21 - A lot of unanswered Questions
confused
aescu
I normally don't do this kind of things, I write fics if there are missing scenes but this time there are not just one or two scenes missing, there are entire holes! I actually wanted to write what happend to Castiel between 5.18 and 5.21 but there are a shit load of unanswered questions, things that I believe the writers did not think through or even consider.

I don't have a lot of answers, just questions, too many questions. Perhaps somebody else can answer one or another?

1. Time frame

According to what Dean said in 5.20 they have been searching for Castiel and Adam for about 2 month.

Castiel said on the phone that he had appeared in Louisiana injured and the Doctors thought he was brain dead. According to the scratches and bruises on his face he cannot have been in the hospital for more than a few days. Those scratches look fresh and the bruises? Not even greenish so at best four or five days old.

What happened in the missing MONTHS? Did Castiel spent them in limbo? Or still fighting with the other Angels?

2. Castiel's injuries

While on the phone it is clearly that the injuries are still hurting - at least as soon as Castiel tries to move.

When he rescues the boys from Pestilence there is no pain shown on his face (you know, except from the part where Pestilence messes with him), not even when the nurse falls on top of him. He does not look as if on heavy pain meds either.

So, is he still hurt or miraculously healed?

3. Hospital/Police

I'm not from the USA, I don't know how things like that work there, but here in Austria if you'd show up with an injury like that (a freaking sigil carved into your chest!) doctors would start to ask questions. And if you pop out of thin air above a ship people would talk. If a seemingly brain dead person is commited to hospital people will search his pockets for some kind of ID so Castiel no longer has Jimmy Novaks wallet nor the cellphone or fake IDs Dean gave him or otherwise the Winchesters/Bobby/Amelia would have been contacted.

I wonder if Jimmy Novak is still in the Police computer marked as missing.

I wonder why the police, who will undoubtably investigate this crime, does neither check their records on missing people nor ask Castiel as soon as he is awake unconvenient questions.

Another point is that Castiel seemingly is discharged from hospital pretty soon. Remember the phone call? Castiel is clearly in pain and the injuries look fresh. Still he has to be released pretty soon after because the bus ride to Pestilence's current whereabouts takes some time, too. (I don't know where the Winchesters encounter Pestilence but Delacroix Island is somewhere near New Orleans if i'm not mistaken, and Sioux Falls is approx. 20 hours worth of driving away)

I know that one can sign some kind of form and then is discharged even if the doctors would like you to stay longer but this seems a bit too rushed.

4. Where is Jimmy?

The question if Jimmy is still there or not has been asked since 5.01.

Let's look at the facts:
  • In early S5 Misha himself said that he chose to believe that Jimmy was still alive and played Castiel accordingly.
  • In 5.18 Castiel tells the Winchesters that his vessel is craving for red meat.
  • In 5.21 the vessel is not responding when Castiel is unconscious
I like to believe that in 5.18 Jimmy is still alive and the hamburgers are his desire (because I don't think a mere body would have such specific cravings) but what's up with him in 5.21? What happens when the Angel riding your skin falls unconscious? Do you take the wheel again? Or are you still savely tucked away as long as the Angel is inside your body? In Supernatural there has been no precendence of what would happen in that case. When Jimmy resurfaced in 4.20 Castiel was gone from his body.

So is Jimmy still in there? Or finally gone for good?

5. What happened when Castiel banished the Angels in 5.18?

In 4.22 Castiel used the sigil on Zachariah without himself being banished, too. What went wrong in 5.18? And why did that leave him drained as stated by Castiel himself in 5.21?

To at least try to answer those questions taking a look at how the sigil works might prove useful. Here is my theory:
  • Assumption 1: It surely has some kind of range limitations otherwise you would banish all Angels on earth. With everything that has a range I think the nearer you are, the more affected you are.
  • Assumption 2: The person activating the sigil is NOT affected. Usually. As seen in 4.22 with Cas banishing Zachariah. (in 4.10 and 5.01 the sigil was used by humans)

Lets just assume these two assumptions are correct and add the fact that Castiel DID vanish, too. My guess is that he did not carve the sigil only into Jimmy Novak's chest, but into his very Grace. So the sigil was way more powerful than usually. Powerful enough to send even the activator to the cornfield. Maybe even powerful enough to banish the other Angel's for good (because otherwise I'd think they would have killed Cas wherever he got the lot of them - and himself - banished to). So he used up nearly all of his Grace and voila, he's left as dry as the Sahara and ends up in a hospital.

Another thing that suggests that that might be at least partly correct is that it looks as if Castiel is exploding. Go back to 4.10 and watch how Anna banished Cas & Uriel, go back to 4.22 and watch how Zach vanished. And now compare to how the other Angels disappeared in 5.18. Compare the visuals. There is a big difference here. in 5.18 it's not the other Angels that start glowing and zap! are gone, it's Castiel exploding with light and yanking them along.

edit:

6. Jimmy Novak's Clothes

Do you remember how Castiel ripped open his shirt in 5.18? I'm sure watched in high quailty you could have even seen the buttons flying. Remember how he looked when he entered Pestilence's room in 5.21? Pristine clothes? (Hey, even his tie was less askew than usually!) I have never heard of a hospital that not only washes the private clothes of a patient but sews on missing buttons and darns the holes...

There are a lot of other questions that I haven't mentioned here that this episode left unanswered (like for examply why the reapers are gathering in front of an empty building - is it really just so Dean can question Crowley's motives/abilities?) but those were the ones relevant for what I wanted to write and if I don't stop here I'll end up with a 10 pages essay about what this episode could have been given enough air time and thought from the writers.

Don't get me wrong, I enjoyed this episode very much, I loved Crowley, I loved Death and I'm glad Castiel is back. But if I would attempt to game master such a holey and (partly) half-assed story my players would eat me alive.
